Biography

Dr Brian Daniel Kelly MB BCh BAO BMedSci MSc MD FRCSI, is a Urologist and Genito-Urinary Surgical Oncologist at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Brian who graduated from University College Dublin, Ireland in 2007. He undertook his Basic Surgical Training Scheme in Galway, Ireland before commencing his Specialist Registrar training in Birmingham, UK.

Brian has completed a Bachelor in Medical Science in Anatomy and also a Masters of Science in Healthcare Informatics at UCD, Ireland. Brian later undertook a two-year research fellowship resulting in the awarding of a Doctorate of Medicine for investigating the role of circulating microRNAs in Prostate Cancer at the National University of Ireland, Galway funded by the NBCRI. Brian has also worked as a Clinical Lecturer in two universities in Ireland and the UK. In 2017 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Brian was the President of the British Association of Surgical Oncology Trainees from 2017-2018. He was also a European Association of Urology guideline panel associate and helped to write and update the EAU guidelines on Male Infertility. Brian was also a TUF Fellow in 2018 (The Urology Foundation of the UK), a highly prestigious award.

Following the completion of Brian’s specialist registrar training in the UK, he took up a Consultant post at University Hospital Birmingham (UHB), UK where he specialised in cancer surgery for; bladder, testicular, prostate and kidney cancer as well as Endourology. UHB is one of the highest volume centralised cancer centres in the UK.

He also has a keen interest in medical and healthcare informatics, healthcare research, electronic medical records and also in developing and testing healthcare Apps and other data reporting tools.

Brian specialises in robotic, laparoscopic and open urology cancer surgery, and is a triple fellowship trained urologist - having completed a Robotic Fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2019, a Fellowship in Oncology and Endourology at Austin Health in 2020 and a Genito-Urinary Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, completed in 2022.

He has very many publications in per reviewed journals and regularly reviews for many urology journals and is on the editorial boards of urology journals also. His main research interest is in prostate cancer, biostatistics, risk stratification and risk prediction, decision-making and investigating social determinants of health.

Clinically, Brian has a particular interest in benign and malignant genetic kidney cancers such as; AMLs, oncocytomas, LAM, TS and VHL. A skillset he attained doing highly specialised multidisciplinary clinics at UHB, a skillset he has brought to the Peter Mac. Surgically, Brian has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery such as robotic assisted prostatectomy and robotic assisted partial nephrectomy, as well as a special interest in major open surgery- mainly, total pelvic exenteration and urinary reconstruction with ureteric reimplantation, ileal conduits and neo-bladder formation.

Brian is a firm believer in the benefits of centralised healthcare and takes great joy in providing the best care for his patients and feels that clear, open and honest communication with patients is key.
