The Apheresis unit also supplies support to recipients of bone marrow transplants. It does so via the collection of donor products for use within the PIHS and in hospitals. This includes domestic and global hospitals.
Our service is on Level 3 of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC). This facility is purpose-built. It has eight treatment chairs dedicated to the provision of apheresis services.
An on-call service ensures emergency treatment is available 24 hours per day. The Royal Melbourne Hospital's Intensive Care Unit can treat adult patients when needed. The Royal Children’s Hospital's Intensive Care Unit can treat paediatric patients.
Clinical trials
We collect cells for several clinical trial programs. These programs are developing new cellular therapies. Such therapies include Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells for patients with malignancies.
Every patient who joins in a clinical trial is integral to the trials team. We are pursuing innovative research from bench to bedside. This research includes other areas such as supportive care and epidemiology.
Speak to your specialist if you want to take part in or have questions about clinical trials.
