The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre proudly offers oncology massage as one of the wellbeing programs within our Patient Experience and Wellbeing Department. Oncology massage is a specialised therapy known to foster physical and emotional wellbeing, and a sense of relaxation for people with a diagnosis of cancer. When we recently evaluated our oncology massage program, people who received the service reported benefits including reduced pain, tiredness, anxiety, nausea, and drowsiness.
Who will be providing this Oncology massage service?
Ronna Moore is a qualified massage therapist with specialist training through Oncology Massage Training Australia. This means she is trained to understand the side effects of cancer treatments and identify any medical reasons a patient should not be receiving massage at a particular time.
What can patients expect at an Oncology massage session?
-
A chat with the therapist about your medical history and any symptoms or side effects you might be experiencing
-
A light pressure massage guided by your priorities and preferences
-
A private and quiet space within the Wellbeing Centre
-
Massage through clothing or directly onto the skin
It is important to remember that this is not deep tissue massage.
When can I have an Oncology massage appointment?
Five appointments are available each Wednesday and Friday with an inpatient appoint held also on these days:
-
9:45am
-
10:30am
-
11:15am
-
12:00pm
-
12:45pm
-
2:15pm (inpatient appointment)
The time allocated for oncology massage therapy sessions will be 45 minutes. This includes a brief consultation with the oncology massage therapist and time to prepare for the session. Evidence has shown that 30 minutes of hands-on massage is just as beneficial as 45-60 minutes.
Each individual patient can access a maximum of four oncology massages per year. Pending session availability, patients can choose to access the four sessions close together or spaced apart.
Do patients need a referral?
No but we suggest discussing your intention to access this service with your treating doctor or nurse consultant to ensure there are no medical reasons for why you cannot have a massage. Oncology massage is available for Peter Mac patients in the Wellbeing Centre.
How much does it cost?
The first session is free of charge and thereafter is offered at the subsidised rate of $35. Additional subsidy is available, please do not hesitate to speak with a Wellbeing team member.
