Carer Support Program
While caring is very rewarding, studies have shown it can also be challenging. Many carers report poor health and high levels of stress. The Carer Support Program helps carers to navigate the health service and carer supports and provides psychological support to carers with high needs.
Carer Support Officer
What does the Carer Support Officer do?
- Has one on one conversations with carers to understand their needs (in person and via telehealth).
- Develops a wellbeing plan with the carer.
- Provides tailored information and supports carers to access services and supports at Peter Mac and in the community.
- Refers to appropriate internal and external services, or alternatively, empowers carers to self-refer.
- Assists the carer in navigating the hospital system.
When should carers access this service?
Carers can access this service at any stage, we know accessing this service as early as possible is best. Taking part in this program early helps us to make sure carers have all the support they need.

Carer Psychology Service
Our Clinical Psychologist provides services for carers of people with cancer with the following concerns:
- Oncology carer experience
- Carer-related distress
- Difficulty coping in carer role
This service operates one day per week (Wednesdays) and is available to eligible carers of Peter Mac patients in person or via telehealth.

Carers Circle
Carer's Circle is a monthly support group for those caring for someone with cancer. Carers Circle is a safe space to connect with other carers, share experiences of caring for someone with cancer and learn from experts in health and wellbeing.
