Peter Mac’s Gamma Knife team is today celebrating a year of delivering state of the art non-invasive radiosurgery to Australian and New Zealand patients.

The Gamma Knife is a cutting-edge technology that uses radiation to precisely target and treat tumours and other neurological conditions in hard-to-access parts of the brain.

The dedicated Peter Mac team, in collaboration with experts from across the globe, began treating the first patients at the start of 2021. 

Throughout the first year, the $8 million machine has treated 230 patients across more than 730 treatment ‘episodes’, including one paediatric patient. 

Results so far have been positive.

“The outcomes for our patients have been very positive – and the non-invasive nature of the procedure means they can get back to their lives straight away,” Gamma Knife lead clinician Dr Neda Haghighi says. 

“I would like to thank the entire team for their tireless efforts in implementing this technology and providing world class care to  improve the lives of so many.”

The Gamma Knife, the first of its kind to be installed in Victoria and only the third in Australia, was co-funded equally by the Victorian Government and through the generous donations to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation.
