Peter Mac, Monash Health extend long partnership in Melb’s south-east

04 October 2023

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Monash Health have extended their almost 30-year partnership which is providing outstanding cancer care to patients in Melbourne’s south-east and beyond.

Peter Mac has provided radiotherapy and other patient services at Monash Cancer Centre, within the Moorabbin Hospital operated by Monash Health, since 1994.

The latest agreement extends this partnership by five years to mid-2028, with an option for a further five-year extension to mid-2033. It’s the first time an effective ten-year agreement is in place.

Peter Mac’s Acting Chief Executive Karen Fox said: “we are delighted to announce this major extension of our partnership with Monash Health and which ensures cancer patients in Melbourne’s south-east and beyond have access to Peter Mac’s services much closer to home”.

“The new agreement will provide great stability to Peter Mac’s valued staff at Monash Cancer Centre and is a strong platform from which we can continue the future growth of this service.”

Peter Mac’s team at the Monash Cancer Centre consists of skilled radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, doctors, nurses, allied health, and administrative staff.

Monash Health Interim Chief Executive Martin Keogh said the partnership will see the two health services continue to work together and collaborate closely to provide high-quality, timely, and seamless care for cancer patients.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to provide excellent cancer care to patients at Moorabbin Hospital,” Mr Keogh said.

“In partnership with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Monash Cancer Centre uniquely provides our community access to all care, from diagnosis to treatment, and follow-up support, all in one place, close to home.”

Earlier this year Peter Mac also extended its similar agreement with Western Health, to operate the Sunshine Hospital Radiation Therapy Centre in Melbourne’s west, until 2031.

Peter Mac also provides radiotherapy at centres in Box Hill and Bendigo. As a public health service, accessing radiotherapy and other cancer services at these Peter Mac centres is free of charge to patients who hold a Medicare card.
