This course is for all Interpreters who would like to learn more about cancer. During the session, you will hear from professionals and interpreters servicing in the cancer space. This is an opportunity to learn more about cancer, cancer terminology, how to approach challenging situations interpreters face such as: delivering bad news, navigating family meetings, interpreting in palliative care and in environments where Voluntary Assisted Dying is being discussed.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Explain what cancer is in your own words and increase your familiarity with some of the terms used during cancer conversations.
- To increase your familiarity and confidence with interpreting for chemotherapy education sessions.
- To understand the role of the interpreter in discussions related to Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD).
- To increase knowledge about clinical trials, including the contents of consent forms and plain language statements, thus enhancing ability to effectively interpret during these conversations.
- To increase confidence and self-care during challenging scenarios such as family meetings, palliative care, and end-of-life conversations.
- To gain perspectives and tips from interpreters experienced in the cancer setting and increase your own tools and strategies to use in your own interpreting sessions with this patient group.
