Talking cancer care in Bendigo

19 September 2024

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is asking cancer patients from Bendigo and the Lodden Mallee region for their feedback about their care.

The ‘Patient Parliament’ event will be held on Thursday October 3 at Bendigo Health (100 Barnard St, Bendigo) and is open to current and past Peter Mac patients, their carers and family members.

James Fowler, Peter Mac’s Deputy Director – Patient Experience and Wellbeing, said the Patient Parliament is an opportunity for patients and families to share their thoughts on their experience as a cancer patient at Peter Mac.

“This is the first time we have held a Patient Parliament in Bendigo and we’re very excited to hear from patients about what matters most to them when it comes to their cancer treatment,” James said.

“Having patients share their experiences and feedback is critical to us being able to provide the best possible care.

“The Patient Parliament is a chance for patients, families and carers to share ideas, concerns and solutions in an open environment.

“This is a chance for people to have their say about the care they or their loved ones receive,” he said.

James said similar events were held at Peter Mac’s Parkville campus in Melbourne earlier this year.

“We’ve had a great response to previous Patient Parliament events but we know that everyone’s experience of cancer is unique and there will be differences for people in regional areas compared to those living in Melbourne,” he said.

“We are always looking at better ways of doing things and we know that we learn the most from the people who receive our care whether they are patients, carers or family members.

“Some people might have provided feedback in this type of forum before and others might be looking to do this for the first time but we want to hear from as many patients as possible to understand their perspectives,” James said.

The Patient Parliament will run between 2.30pm – 4.30pm on Thursday October 3 at Bendigo Health.

The event is open to Peter Mac current and past patients, carers and family members who receive care at Peter Mac and patients do not have to have received care at Peter Mac’s Bendigo campus.
