Open House Melbourne - it's a wrap!
30 July 2024
And just like that it was over! Open House Melbourne 2024 at Peter Mac is all wrapped up!
We welcomed 750 visitors across the weekend with people coming out on both days despite the inclement weather.
Director Communications Vanessa O’Shaughnessy, said it was amazing to see the enthusiasm and obvious passion shown by those who were part of the event.
“A big thank you to everyone who took the time to visit Peter Mac over the weekend and to our staff and volunteers for sharing their expertise with our visitors,” Vanessa said.
“It was clear that the community are incredibly engaged and interested in the work taking place at Peter Mac. The vast majority quite literally stayed for two to three hours, taking time to visit many of the areas that were open.
“We can all be confident that not only will people have learned something through their visit but that the interactions and things they have seen will be a topic of conversation for weeks and months to come,” she said.
Visitors were able to see a range of different services at Peter Mac including Radiation Therapy, Pathology, Pharmacy, Cancer Imaging, Surgery, Research and the Ambulatory Cell Therapies Unit as well as seeing the fantastic 75th anniversary display that has been set up on Level 7.
“Taking part in Open House enabled us to demonstrate the incredible impact that Peter Mac has had over the past 75 years and continues to have for people with cancer in Victoria, Australia and the world,” Vanessa said.
“It was very special to see Peter Mac staff and volunteers sharing their stories and demonstrating the sense of pride they have in their work.
“Hopefully we have been able to demystify cancer treatment and care for the public and build support for the work we do at Peter Mac,” she said.
A video to commemorate Peter Mac’s 75th anniversary was showcased in the Lecture Theatre and has now been uploaded to YouTube.
The 75th anniversary display will remain in place on Level 7 for the next few months so staff and visitors can learn more about our history and how Australia’s only public hospital dedicated to cancer care and research came to be.
