Peter Mac’s Associate Professor Paul Beavis has become the first Australian-based researcher to be named a Cancer Research Institute (CRI) Lloyd J. Old STAR (Scientists TAking Risks).
The grant, valued at USD $1.25 million over 5 years, recognises Associate Professor Beavis as an exceptional cancer researcher who is expected to be a leader in the field of cancer immunotherapy.
“The CRI Lloyd J. Old STAR Program provides me with long-term funding and allows me the freedom and flexibility to pursue high-risk, high-reward research that is at the forefront of discovery and innovation in cancer immunotherapy,” said Associate Professor Beavis, a Group Leader at Peter Mac.
“The funds are not restricted to a particular project but I will use the funding to further explore my research into enhancing the efficacy of adoptive cellular therapy through advanced genome engineering.
“I hope that this research provides us with insights that lead to the development of new immune-based therapies for the treatment of cancer.”
The long-term funding provided through the Lloyd J. Old STAR Program gives a degree of flexibility and freedom to explore outside-the-box and disruptive avenues of research.
The recipients are at the forefront of discovery and innovation and will be viewed as the leaders in scientific thought and invention.
