The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has received its highest ever ranking in the latest release of the "World’s Best Specialised Hospitals".

It was rated 14th out of 300 oncology hospitals from around the globe for 2024, rising from 19th in the list for 2023.

Peter Mac was also the only Australian centre in the top 100 - the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital was the next Australian Centre in the oncology list at 105.

More than 1500 hospitals were included in this year’s rankings including specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynaecology, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics, orthopaedics, paediatrics, pulmonology and urology.

Hospitals are ranked based on a global survey of doctors and health care professionals, using publicly available hospital quality metrics and patient satisfaction data.

Acting Peter Mac CEO Karen Fox says that this outstanding global acknowledgement of the efforts people have made while working at Peter Mac.

“This is fantastic recognition for the work done by the staff at Peter Mac and the quality care we provide to our patients every day,” Ms Fox said.

“Our clinical staff and researchers are at the forefront of when it comes to caring for patients with cancer and looking for new ways to achieve even better outcomes.”

Peter Mac was also ranked 135th in the World’s Best Smart Hospital 2024 in recognition for its use in Artificial Intelligence. This ranking was based on an assessment of 330 hospitals from 28 countries looking at their use of electronic functionalities, telemedicine, digital imaging, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

Partnering with global research firm, Statista, Newsweek says the rankings are released to assist patients with finding information on which hospital would be best for them.
