Today, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has launched its first Environmental Sustainability Strategy.

The strategy is the culmination of years of effort from dedicated staff, along with the insights derived from a recently completed carbon footprint study and a waste audit.

The strategy commits Peter Mac to achieving net zero emissions by 2045 for all emissions that are in our direct control, encompassing emissions designated Scopes 1, 2 and some of our Scope 3 emissions.

This is in line with Victorian Government targets.

In the foreword to the strategy, Peter Mac Chief Executive Officer Professor Jason Payne says the targets outlined are ambitious but achievable.

“Our new approach to environmental sustainability is consistent with the aspirational, forward-thinking attitude that our patients and the community have come to expect from us,” he said.

”As clinicians, researchers and professionals our sustainability objectives are data-driven, comprehensively benchmarked, and allow us to measure progress along the way.”

While the primary focus of Peter Mac’s emissions targets are focused on its headquarters on Grattan Street, Melbourne, the Environmental Sustainability Strategy also measures the impact of Peter Mac campuses. Many of the initiatives outlined will be implemented across all campuses.

Annual action plans will be developed and reported on to the Peter Mac leadership team, and the Board.

The strategy was launched today at the monthly Environmental Sustainability Working Group meeting, where people from across Peter Mac come together to share ideas and achievements in sustainability.

The group includes representatives from medical, nursing, research, IMCT, hospital in the home, communications, radiation therapy, infrastructure, procurement, improvement, Peter Mac Foundation and building partners Plenary and Honeywell.
