Seven Peter Mac researchers make esteemed Highly Cited Researchers List

Seven Peter Mac researchers have made the esteemed annual Highly Cited Researchers List compiled by data analysts Clarivate.
Professors Sherene Loi, John Seymour, Ben Solomon, Phil Darcy, Ricky Johnstone and Associate Professors Shahneen Sandhu and Paul Beavis have made the 2023 cohort as researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence reflected in their publications that have been cited multiple times by other researchers over the last decade.
These papers rank in the top one per cent by citations in their respective field/s and publication year in Clarivate’s worldwide Web of Science database – a platform that includes global research, conference papers, books and content from journals. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are 1 in 1,000.
Peter Mac Executive Director Cancer Research, Professor Ricky Johnstone, said it is pleasing to see seven Peter Mac researchers on the list, further enhancing our reputation as a world-leading cancer research centre.
“This is global recognition of the exceptional influence and impact of our researchers which reflects the quality of their work, their collaborations and the influence they have in their respective fields,” he said.
“It’s also fantastic to see a mix of clinical and laboratory researchers recognised, demonstrating the breadth of bench to bedside work we do here at Peter Mac.”
David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said the evaluation and selection strategy combines both quantitative and qualitative analysis to produce the list.
“The Highly Cited Researchers List identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Peter Mac whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community and innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and more secure,” he said.
“Their contributions resonate far beyond their individual achievements, strengthening the foundation of excellence and innovation in research.”
Each researcher selected has authored multiple highly cited papers which rank in the top one per cent by citations for their field/s and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade.
Citation activity is not the sole selection indicator. A preliminary list based on citation activity is then refined using qualitative analysis and expert judgement.
The six Peter Mac researchers are among 321 researchers from Australia – the fifth highest country ranked behind the US, China, United Kingdom and Germany - to feature on the list. In total, 6,849 individual researchers from institutions in 67 countries and regions made the list in 2023.
