Sex and cancer: unlocking the challenges faced by patients
03 October 2024
Cancer and its treatments can leave physical and emotional scars that can deeply affect a person’s intimacy, self-expression, and self-image long after the last round of chemotherapy or radiation.
Peter Mac researcher A\Prof Safeera Hussainy says most patients with cancer experience sexuality concerns following treatment, regardless of their age, gender, relationship status, or sexual orientation.
“Sexuality is a critical component of human wellbeing, encompassing much more than sexual orientation or physical intimacy - it influences self-esteem, emotional health, and the quality of relationships,” A/Prof Safeera Hussainy says.
To address this, a Peter Mac research team is embarking on a new study to uncover the unspoken challenges faced by patients to develop a brand-new sexuality service.
“Addressing sexuality concerns is a vital part of holistic cancer care and we want patients to feel empowered to discuss these issues without shame or embarrassment,” A\Prof Hussainy says.
“We don’t want people suffering in silence – we want to be having more conversations about sexuality and getting our patients the help they need.”
The research team is running a three-hour workshop at Peter Mac Melbourne - accepting applications from today - to help them better understand the patient experience so they can develop a one-stop-shop of resources and services to address sexuality concerns.
“Hearing from patients is vital for us to develop a service that has the biggest impact,” A\Prof Hussainy says.
“We know this can be a difficult topic to talk about – but you will be helping so many people by sharing your experiences - and helping us to deliver even better care to patients in the future.”
Patients over the age of 18 who have experienced concerns with intimacy, sex or self-image as a result of cancer treatment are invited to apply to take part in the workshop.
