Top US Fellowship for Prof Michael Jefford
24 July 2024
Professor Michael Jefford has been made a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and is the first Australian-trained medico to receive this honour.
ASCO is the top US, and leading global, professional body for physicians of all sub-specialties who care for people with cancer.
Prof Jefford is recognised for his “extraordinary volunteer service, engagement, dedication, and commitment to ASCO”, particularly for his leadership in cancer survivorship.
Prof Jefford is a Consultant Medical Oncologist, is Director of the Australian Cancer Survivorship Centre, and leads survivorship-focussed research within the Department of Health Services Research at Peter Mac.
He joined ASCO’s Cancer Survivorship Committee (CSC) in 2018 and became the first non-US chair-elect of this committee, following a series of highly prominent leaders. When the CSC merged into a new Health Equity and Outcomes Committee, Prof Jefford co-chaired this.
Prof Jefford chaired the refresh of ASCO’s Survivorship Compendium and assisted in developing ASCO’s Equity Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. He is a current member of ASCO’s Survivorship Guideline Advisory Group, previously served on ASCO’s Cancer Care Delivery Council and has been a liaison to the Annual Meeting Education Committee.
Prof Jefford has contributed to various ASCO guidelines and publications (including Cancer.Net) and been on the faculty of annual meetings.
All of the new FASCO recipients are listed here on the ASCO website.
