Dr Cristina Oliveira Mateos
Biography
Cristina has developed my studies in Spain, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of the Basque Country and a Master in Genetics and Genomics from the University of Barcelona. Cristina received a PhD in Biomedicine in 2020 from the University of Barcelona developing my research at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). The project focused on the epigenetic regulation of oncogenic loci mediated by antisense non-coding RNAs with relevance in breast cancer and sarcomas, studying changes in DNA methylation, chromatin conformation, miRNAs expression and mRNAs translation. The work included the analysis of the lncRNA role in the regulation of normal human myogenesis. Cristina rejoined the group at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) as a Postdoctoraltoral Researcher in 2021.
Cristina took part in the study of the dysregulated transcriptome (T-UCRs and circRNAs) in Rett Syndrome, an epigenetic-based neurological disorder, using cellular models generated by the CRISPR/Cas9 technique. All this work has resulted in several publications in high impact scientific journals, one of them as the lead author, together with two reviews and a book chapter. Cristina joined the Johnstone Lab at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as a Postdoctoral in 2023.Cristina's research focuses on the study of the MLL-CBP fusion, one of the most common chromosomal rearrangements in leukemia, defining its pathogenic effects and analysing the use of inhibitors with therapeutic potential.
