Biography

Dr Lorey Smith is a Senior Research Officer in the Molecular Oncology lab at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Lorey completed her PhD in 2015 at the University of Melbourne, studying how cell polarity networks control cancer initiation and progression. Having developed an interest in the complex networks that control cancer cell behaviour and plasticity, Lorey now applies genome-wide functional genomics screens, RNA sequencing, and metabolomics to dissect the molecular bases of adaptive resistance to MAPK targeted therapies in melanoma. Lorey was recently awarded a Victorian Cancer Agency Mid-Career Fellowship, a Cancer Council Victoria grant-in-aid, the Peter Mac Lea Award. Lorey is also passionate about achieving equity and diversity within the scientific process, and advocates for gender equality through multiple platforms, including the Peter Mac gender equity and diversity committee and the Women in Science Parkville Precinct (WiSPP) committee.
