Our hair is a strong part of our identity. Hair loss often adds to the trauma of the cancer journey on top of the shock of diagnosis. Our trained staff and volunteers can help you with headwear wardrobe information. They are understanding of any heightened emotions that you may have.
We also provide you with hair removal. This can be useful if you do not wish to have the experience of losing your hair over time.
We have designed our headwear room to provide you with privacy and dignity. We can cover mirrors with curtains. This is helpful if you don't wish to see your reflection until we have helped you fit your new headwear or wig. We are also able to separate the room with a curtain. This gives you the comfort of support from family or friends. At the same time, it avoids them seeing you without hair or during your hair loss.

We have a range of wigs in various hair colours, lengths and styles that you can borrow.
Headwear Service
You may be expecting or experiencing hair loss. If so, you can visit the Volunteer Department to access our free headwear service. Our dedicated community volunteers sew thousands of new pieces each year. They have a wide range of night caps, berets, turbans, head scarves, hats, and beanies available.
Please note:
- Due to limited supply, there is a limit of one wig and five headwear items per patient
- Wigs and headwear are only available for Peter Mac patients - please have your UR (Unit Record) number handy
- We encourage you to come into the Volunteer department to ensure the correct style and size. However, if you are not well enough to visit in person, a volunteer may be able to visit you on the ward and help with your wig or headwear needs there
- Wig fittings are best done once you have lost most or all your hair, to ensure the best fit
Headwear room location
The Headwear room is in the Volunteer Services Department at Peter Mac Melbourne and is open Monday to Fridays, from 9am to 3pm.
