Dr David Liu
Biography
Dr David Liu is an Oesophago-gastric and General Surgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is also a senior lecturer within The University of Melbourne Department of Surgery. David performs high-volume minimally invasive surgeries to remove cancers of the oesophagus and stomach. He also undertakes diagnostic and interventional endoscopies for patients with head & neck, oesophageal and stomach cancers. David graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2007. He commenced specialist General Surgery training in 2011 at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and at Austin Health. Subsequently, he undertook Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery training through the AANZGOSA (Australia & Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric & Oesophageal Surgery Association) program at Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia, and Austin Hospital, Victoria. In these centres, David trained with internationally renowned surgeons and performed high-volume cancer surgeries. Additionally, David has visited Seoul National University Hospital, Korea, and Utrecht Medical Centre, The Netherlands, to gain further experience in gastro-oesophageal cancer surgery.
David has a passion for service innovation, translational biology, and clinical collaborative research, focussing on improving outcomes for patients with gastro-oesophageal cancers. He leads multiple clinical trials, is widely published, and has a strong track record for attracting research funding. Moreover, David leads the General and Gastrointestinal Surgery Research Group within the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery, and collaborates closely with the Tumourigenesis and Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory within the Cancer Evolution & Metastasis Program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
