Sam Van Staalduinen

Statewide Educator, Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service

Biography

Sam is an educationalist with a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Sydney. Her work has spanned doctor-patient and intercultural communication, patient safety, and all levels of medical education for various academic, government and international agencies. Since 2010 she has worked with the University of Melbourne (UoM), the Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and the Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service in leading a range of education and training initiatives in youth cancer care and adolescent health more broadly. 

Sam specialises in the design and development of multidisciplinary postgraduate and continuing professional development programs, with a particular interest in online learning. She led development of the UoM Graduate Certificate in Adolescent Health and Wellbeing (Oncology) and the world’s first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on global adolescent health. She has designed and contributed to a pedagogically diverse range of online learning modules and co-developed AYA cancer content for the UoM Master of Cancer Sciences.

Sam brings an evidence-based, learner-centered approach to her educational design and development work, with a strong focus on pedagogy and relevant learning theory. She has extensive experience developing a wide range of educational resources, including interactive online content, experiential and interview-based videos and podcasts. Her primary research interests relate to the development and evaluation of innovative approaches to health professional education and training.
