A note on 26 January
26 January 2024
Today Peter Mac proudly celebrates the strength, resilience, and many contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
26 January is a day of mourning and reflection for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We acknowledge this, and pay tribute to their more than 65,000 years of continuous connection to land and culture. We thank First Nations people for their ongoing care of the land and waters.
For many reasons, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people still experience higher rates of cancer and worse outcomes than non-Indigenous people. We are committed to achieving healthcare equity in Australia, and helping to ‘close the gap’.
To us, working towards reconciliation means many things. It means genuinely engaging with, and listening to, First Nations people and organisations. It means supporting our workforce to develop their cultural literacy, and providing a culturally safe and welcoming environment for First Nations people.
Our second Reconciliation Action Plan, to be launched in the coming months, will guide us as we continue this work.
