Grattan St re-opens to traffic
17 June 2024
We’re excited to share the news that Grattan St has been re-opened to through traffic between Flemington Rd and Swanston St!
Parts of the road have been closed for more than six years to allow for the construction of the Parkville Station but Grattan St was officially re-opened over the weekend.
This includes access for motorists, pedestrians, bikes between Royal Parade and Swanston St, past the University of Melbourne.
The new Parkville Station runs directly under Grattan St an is more than 30 metres below ground. The station is part of the Metro Tunnel Project and will open in 2025.
Changes to Grattan St as part of the project include:
- wider footpaths
- more pedestrian crossings
- bicycle lanes separated from traffic
- 250 new bike parking spaces
- one lane of traffic in each direction
- over 100 trees and nearly 3000m2 of plants.
While the road is now open, a section of the footpath on the north side of Grattan Street will remain closed until late June while reinstatement works are completed.
Please note – buses in the area will continue on their current routes until further notice and Barry St will remain closed to traffic as per the approved design.
