A very special Peter Mac wedding

It wasn’t what they had planned, but Sarah Addis said “I do” to Scott Boyd in the garden of Peter Mac’s Wellbeing Centre yesterday – the wedding organised in less that 24-hours.
The 29-year-old couple was preparing to fly to Noosa next week for their dream wedding but plans rapidly changed when Sarah’s mum Lynda fell ill over the weekend.
She was diagnosed with leptomeningeal disease - cancer in the fluid and membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord – and was admitted to palliative care all within a matter of days.
This followed on from the 64-year-old's breast cancer diagnosis in 2021.
“A palliative care doctor suggested the idea of a wedding at Peter Mac to us so that Mum could be as good as she could be,” Sarah explains.
“A nurse named Rebecca Hunt in Ward 5A coordinated everything. She helped us organise the Wellbeing Centre and got social workers involved and they helped us set it all up.”
Sarah and Scott’s friends and family also sprang into action and organised everything, from catering to flowers to a celebrant.
And the nurses on 5A helped Lynda to prepare “and got her all ready and dolled up”.
Associate Nurse Unit Manager Aprila Ramadan said the 5A team rallied around to help get everything sorted.
“It was so beautiful! When Sarah came out in her white dress, all us nurses put our arms up and she walked through the arch with Lynda wheeled behind her,” Aprila said.
“It was a great effort by all involved – with special thanks to Reb, Lucy L and Mel B.
“We wish Sarah and Scott all the best.”
The wedding went off without a hitch – but for Sarah the most important thing was having her mum by her side as she married the love of her life.
“It means so much – it didn’t matter where it was to us, it just mattered who was there,” she said.
“And the fact that Mum was able to be there made it really, really special.”
