Peter Mac Named Australia's Top Cancer Research Institute

Peter Mac has been named Australia's leading cancer research institute in The Australian newspaper's Research 2025 Magazine, reaffirming our position at the forefront of global cancer research and innovation. 

Peter Mac was also named the top research institute for Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy and Molecular Imaging. 

Peter Mac’s research has paved the way for significant advancements in understanding and treating complex cancers, with a strong emphasis on precision medicine, immunotherapy, and early detection.

Professor Jayesh Desai, Acting Executive Director of Cancer Research, said the recognition highlights Peter Mac’s sustained excellence in groundbreaking discoveries and clinical advancements.

“This accolade underscores the remarkable calibre of work being undertaken by our researchers, clinicians, and support staff,” he said. 

“We are all driven by a singular focus, to make a tangible difference in the lives of people with cancer. Our researchers continue to push boundaries, delivering world-class innovations that improve patient outcomes.”

Five Peter Mac researchers were also named as the top Australian researcher in their field. These were:

Peter Mac’s bench to bedside approach delivers researchers with the ability to translate their work under one roof, working collaboratively with patients, doctors and other medical specialists.

This led to 482 active clinical trials in the 2023/24 financial year. 

“Our ability to integrate laboratory discoveries with clinical application is a hallmark of Peter Mac’s approach,” Professor Desai said.

“We are inspired every day by the patients and families we serve, and we remain committed to finding better treatments, earlier interventions, and, ultimately, cures.”

As the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer, Peter Mac continues to lead in translating research into practice, ensuring patients benefit directly from the latest advances. 

A Year of Remarkable Achievements

In the 2023-2024 period, Peter Mac’s contributions to cancer research were:

  • 700 researchers working tirelessly to combat cancer from every angle.
  • 38 dedicated research laboratories, serving as hubs for cutting-edge experiments and discoveries.
  • 248 publications in high-impact journals, showcasing pioneering work recognised internationally.
  • A total of 1,052 publications across the year, reflecting the breadth of Peter Mac’s research expertise.
  • 482 active clinical trials, providing patients with access to the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
