Medical careers

We have a dedicated Hospital Medical Officer Manager, who coordinates and welcomes 25 HMOs on secondment from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital. HMO's commence every 10-13 weeks (or about every three months).

This is a long term, well-established program, which is accredited by the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV). We are dedicated to supplying the best experience for our rotating doctors.

Rotations available are: 

• Haematology HMO2 (four) HMO3 (two) 

• Medical Oncology HMO2 (three) HMO3 (six) 

• Palliative Care HMO2 (one) 

• Plastic Surgery HMO3 (one) 

• Psychiatry HMO2 & HMO3 

• Surgical Oncology HMO2 (six) HMO3 (two) 

We have a strong cohort of 76 registrars – 68 of whom we appoint in a true merit listed process. The appointment process involves clinical directors, clinical supervisors, and our Medical Workforce Unit. The other eight registrars are rotated from our parent hospitals such as the Royal Melbourne and St Vincent’s Hospitals, and the Skin and Cancer Foundation. 

• Anaesthetics: 10 registrars 
  Six non-accredited, three accredited, one senior registrar (all direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Dermatology: three registrars 
  Three accredited (two direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Haematology: 15 registrars 
  Seven accredited Clinical Haematology registrars (one also attends Bendigo Health part-time) 
  Seven accredited Laboratory Haematology registrars (all direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Medical Oncology: six registrars 
  Six accredited registrars (all direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Medical (BPTs): three registrars 
  Three accredited registrars (on rotation from Royal Melbourne Hospital) 

• Infectious Diseases: two registrars 
  Two accredited registrars (direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Palliative Care: three registrars 
  Three accredited registrars  - two direct Peter Mac appointments, and one on rotation from St Vincent’s Hospital. 

• Pathology: one registrar
  One accredited Anatomical Pathology registrar (direct Peter Mac appointment) 

• Plastic Surgery: three registrars 
  1 accredited registrar, 2 non-Accredited registrars (all direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Psychiatry: two registrars 
  Two accredited registrars  (both on rotation from St Vincent’s Hospital) 

• Radiation Oncology: 20 registrars 
  20 accredited registrars (all direct Peter Mac appointments) 

• Radiology: five registrars 
  Four Nuclear Medicine Registrars, one Radiology Registrar 

• Surgery: two registrars 
  One Cancer Surgery registrar on rotation from St Vincent’s Hospital and one ENT registrar (direct Peter Mac appointment). 

We have a cohort of about 48 competitive Fellow roles - the total number varies from year to year. We appoint these positions in a true merit- listed process, which include the clinical directors and the Medical Workforce Unit.
