Biography

Associate Professor Catherine Mitchell is currently a consultant Anatomical Pathologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC), where she is involved with reporting histopathology (including fluorescent in situ hybridisation) and molecular pathology. She has 20 years’ experience in the field of Anatomical Pathology, and has a particular interest in tumours of the soft tissues, genitourinary tract, and gastrointestinal tract, as well as cancers of unknown primary.

Dr Mitchell has been a member of the sarcoma, genitourinary and lower gastrointestinal tract tumour streams at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for over 15 years, providing histopathology expertise including reporting surgical biopsy and excision specimens, as well as reviewing cases reported externally.

Dr Mitchell’s focus is predominantly on diagnostic clinical work, but she is involved in collaborative research projects with several groups within the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, particularly in the fields of gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, and soft tissue pathology. Dr Mitchell has over 80 publications, with research involvement focused on providing high quality histopathology expertise, correlating with nuclear medicine, immunophenotypic or molecular features, or response to therapy.
